About Me

Moffat, Scotland
The story of our Museum starts in 1984 when an imaginative group of local people set about establishing a Museum in the old Bakehouse. Since those early days it has flourished and though the collections have increased the area in which to display them can not. The space is limited. Additionally the delightful access through a cobbled pathway and stepped entrance is not friendly for visitors who have any difficulty walking. It has been possible through a generous bequest from an Australian member of the Moffat Clan to buy an adjacent building. We can now join these two buildings together and at a stroke both expand the display and storage areas and provide a new access from the main pavement. Work to create our new look Museum with all the palns for fresh projects which goes with it started in April/May 2012 and will continue till the end of the year. This BLOG or diary will record through simple text and pictures what we are doing as we are doing it. Please wish us well and come and see us in person when we are finished. In the meantime we will be happy to have your encouragement and any comments are very welcome.

Museum Association Exhibition

Four member of the Committee attended this exhibition in the Edinburgh Conference Centre. There was a good selection of display cases and storage solutions which gave them lots of food for thought.

Wendy was particularly looking at storage solutions for pictures which are owned by the Museum but are not currently on display.   It's rather a shady looking picture I'm afraid!

Gold Roman Brooch from Ericstane

While digging peats at Erricstonebrae near the Roman Road, half a gorget or breastplate of a Roman commander was found. It is more than an ounce in weight and appears to be one half of a ring about 3/4"broad and 3" wide with a thin border on both sides about 1" in breadth and meeting outwards in the borders are the letters, the interstices being cut out; IO VI AVG, on one side and VOT XX on the other.
It is now held in a Museum in Los Angeles but a replica is held in the National Museum in Edinburgh.

We hope that we may be able to have a replica on loan to Moffat one day.  This is a photograph.

Windows damp through drying plaster!

The interior doors are being fitted today but there is still a lot of moisture inside the windows because of the plaster drying out.

Darren was busy today doing skirting boards and everything is going well!

Darren is over 6 foot but he has not hit his head on the ceiling yet despite what it looks like.
