As you enter the museum building this is the first item you will see and contains of course, the earliest exhibits. Fossils will be in the light boxes and can be changed as required.
Moffat Museum - 'Taking the Past into the Future'
This will be a photo diary recording the 10 month transition from our current 'Old Bakehouse' premises into our new and extended property bought with the help of a large bequest. Additional funding from The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) will enable us to attain our aim of 'Taking the Past into the Future' and create our 'Museum without Walls'.
About Me
- Moffat Museum
- Moffat, Scotland
- The story of our Museum starts in 1984 when an imaginative group of local people set about establishing a Museum in the old Bakehouse. Since those early days it has flourished and though the collections have increased the area in which to display them can not. The space is limited. Additionally the delightful access through a cobbled pathway and stepped entrance is not friendly for visitors who have any difficulty walking. It has been possible through a generous bequest from an Australian member of the Moffat Clan to buy an adjacent building. We can now join these two buildings together and at a stroke both expand the display and storage areas and provide a new access from the main pavement. Work to create our new look Museum with all the palns for fresh projects which goes with it started in April/May 2012 and will continue till the end of the year. This BLOG or diary will record through simple text and pictures what we are doing as we are doing it. Please wish us well and come and see us in person when we are finished. In the meantime we will be happy to have your encouragement and any comments are very welcome.

Fitting out the Museum
We are now putting up the interpretation boards on the interior walls. It is really looking good. I popped in this morning and this is what I saw.

Sparkling New cases.
Despite the snow the cases were delivered and polished up to a sparkling brand new shine. Here are some pictures of the installers still busy at work.
This is the final posting for the present as the 10 months of building alterations has now elapsed. It has been a busy and time but a lot has been achieved - and we are still smiling! Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund grant, and to others for donations to the project. The official opening is hoped to be in June.
Thank you for reading this, if you have been. Good wishes from all at the Moffat Museum.

Click Netherfield cases arrive tomorrow!
I will take a photograph of them when they arrive. These case are very high spec and have been bought so that we will be able to take delivery of the exhibits from the National Museum of Scotland. i.e. the Roman Fibula and the Neolithic Bow. The items to go into the cases will not arrive until next week but we need to have the cases in place ready for their delivery.

Moffat model railway station takes shape
It is impossible for my camera to do justice to Jock DiCerbo's work in building this exhibit for the Museum. The detail is simply amazing but you will have to wait till we open to see it operating properly. The top photograph shows his 'box of tricks' - tiny figures, rail and scenery. And the bottom shows farm buildings and the railway line carries a working model train which is already in place. When the model is complete it will be a terrific draw for visitors.

Oral History
I am delighted to say that we are up to date with our transcribing or oral history interviews and now have valuable records of 5 residents with more being done this week. The results of our recording so far will be added into the Dumfriesshire collection of Oral History recordings.
